چکیده

We have measured the stability boundary for steady electroconvection in thin, freely suspended liquid crystal lms. As the voltage across the lm, or the lm length, is varied, convective vortices are created or destroyed at the ends of the lm to keep the pattern wave number within a stable range. The measured stability boundary lies substantially inside the Eckhaus boundary calculated for this system. Our results are consistent with a mechanism for boundary-induced wavelength selection proposed by Cross et al. [Phys. Rev.

Dynamic effects induced by renormalization in anisotropic pattern forming systems.

The dynamics of patterns in large two-dimensional domains remains a challenge in nonequilibrium phenomena. Often it is addressed through mild extensions of one-dimensional equations. We show that full two-dimensional generalizations of the latter can lead to unexpected dynamic behavior. As an example we consider the anisotropic Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, which is a generic model of anisotro...

Boundary-Induced Pattern Formation from Temporal Oscillation: Spatial Map Analysis

Boundary-induced pattern formation from a spatially uniform state is investigated using onedimensional reaction-diffusion equations. The temporal oscillation is successively transformed into a spatially periodic pattern, triggered by diffusion from the fixed boundary. We introduced a spatial map, whose temporal sequence, under selection criteria from multiple stationary solutions, can completel...

Solutions for nonlinear convection in the presence of a lateral boundary

A method is described for calculating steady-state patterns in large-scale nonlinear systems, taking into account the effect of a lateral boundary and without the need for extensive numerical calculations. The key feature is the determination of the phase shift of the nonlinear periodic form distant from the boundary as a function of wavelength. This is found by analyzing the solution close to ...

Pattern Forming Dynamical Instabilities of Bose-einstein Condensates: a Short Review

In this short topical review, we revisit a number of works on the pattern-forming dy-namical instabilities of Bose-Einstein condensates in one-and two-dimensional settings. In particular, we illustrate the trapping conditions that allow the reduction of the three-dimensional, mean field description of the condensates (through the Gross-Pitaevskii equation) to such lower dimensional settings, as...

A Real-Time Electroencephalography Classification in Emotion Assessment Based on Synthetic Statistical-Frequency Feature Extraction and Feature Selection

Purpose: To assess three main emotions (happy, sad and calm) by various classifiers, using appropriate feature extraction and feature selection. Materials and Methods: In this study a combination of Power Spectral Density and a series of statistical features are proposed as statistical-frequency features. Next, a feature selection method from pattern recognition (PR) Tools is presented to e...
